Apples

Here is the next painting that i am starting.

I created this still life myself. I wanted to keep it very simple. These paintings are about learning how to paint not about being something that will go on the wall.

Personally if i had to start again, i would put it on a bigger canvas or reduce the scale of the image so there was more white space around the apples. I just ‘forgot’ to do this when i was transferring the design onto the canvas. If i do another one of this painting i will remember that!

The Still Life Set-Up

Apples after two sessions with the undercoat

It’s really nice to be able to paint outside and not worry about rain or anything. I just leave the set up like that overnight and it’s all good in the morning. Hopefully a burglar wouldn’t want to pinch a half done painting!

2nd and 3rd Oil Painting Class

Here are the results from my second and third oil painting class. Please remember that these are still not finished. Also honestly trying to photograph a wet oil painting is horrible!!!

Remind me not to try again.

Here they are, I have decided to do two copies of every painting so i can really practice the techniques and improve. Hopefully.

As you can see, the photo above shows what the painting looked like before i glazed in the colour.

To do the glazes i was using liquol and transparent colours, except when i needed white for the highlights. From this first painting, i have learnt that the while can dull down and make the painting muddy. In future efforts i need to be more careful with the while paint.

Other than that, considering this is my first attempt at oils in class, i think this is a good start. There are still many more layers to go on the pears yet however. Will keep you posted on how it goes.
